New radiation-free targeted therapy detects and eliminates breast cancer tumors in mice

March 31st, 2009

Combining a compound known as a gallium corrole with a protein carrier results in a targeted cancer therapy that is able to detect and eliminate tumors in mice with seemingly fewer side effects than other breast-cancer treatments, says a team of researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) and the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Longtime NFL, college coach Lou Saban dies at 87

March 29th, 2009

< >

pLou Saban, who coached O.J. Simpson in the NFL and ran the New York Yankees for George Steinbrenner during a well-traveled career that spanned five decades, died Sunday. He was 87. pSaban died around 4 a.m. at his home in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., his wife, Joyce, said. He had heart problems for years and recently suffered a fall that required hospitalization, she said. pSaban played football at Indiana University and for the Cleveland Browns of the NFL before embarking on an unmatched head coaching career that included stops with the Boston Patriots and Buffalo Bills of the old American Football League and the NFL’s Denver Broncos, along with college jobs at Miami, Army, Northwestern and Maryland. pSaban, who was 95-99-7 in 16 seasons of pro football, also was president of the New York Yankees from 1981-82 and coached high school football from 1987-89. pHe has been my friend and mentor for over 50 years, and one of the people who helped shape my life, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement. Lou was tough and disciplined, and he earned all the respect and recognition that came his way. He spent a lifetime leading, teaching and inspiring, and took great satisfaction in making the lives around him better. This is a tremendous loss to me personally. pSaban shared the last name of another prominent football coach, Alabama’s Nick Saban. Joyce Saban said the two men might have been second cousins, but said the families weren’t exactly sure whether they were related. pLouis Henry Saban was born in Brookfield, Ill. in 1921 and was a 1940 graduate of Lyons Township High School. After starring at Indiana, Saban played for the Browns from 1946-49 and the next year accepted his first head coaching position — at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. pIn 1955, he took over at Northwestern for a year, then moved to Western Illinois until entering the pro ranks in 1960 to coach the Boston Patriots of the newly formed AFL. pFrom there, Saban went to the Bills in 1962 and guided them to AFL championships in 1964 and 1965, the only championships the Bills have ever won. After a stint with the Broncos, Saban returned to Buffalo. During his second stint with the Bills from 1972-76, he oversaw O.J. Simpson’s record-breaking, 2,003-yard rushing season in 1973. pHe was like a father to me, former Bills defensive back Booker Edgerson said. He steered me in the right direction. He gave me advice. Some of it, I didn’t like, but isn’t that what a father does? pEdgerson, who also played for Saban at Western Illinois and with the Broncos, said he last saw Saban in October at a Western Illinois banquet honoring the coach. pLou Saban was a great teacher, Edgerson said. He knew how to build football programs. He could have built any program — football, baseball, basketball, whatever. Even though his patience was short-tempered, he allowed players to let out their anxieties and frustrations. pAfter quitting the Bills in midseason of 1976, Saban spent two years as athletic director at Miami, where he recruited future Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly. pSaban later became known for how quickly he changed jobs. He coached Army in 1979, was AD at Miami and spent 19 days as athletic director at Cincinnati. He went on to coach high schools, colleges and in the Arena Football League. pSaban spent the 1990s starting or rebuilding programs at places like Peru State, Canton Tech and Alfred State, where he left before the team played its first game. He coached Central Florida in 1983-84. pI’ve coached at all levels, covered the gamut, and I’ve never really seen any difference, Saban said after being hired to coach Alfred in upstate New York in 1994. My coaching techniques are pretty much the same, with some adjustments for what younger players can and can’t do. pSaban spent five years at Canton Tech in northern New York — the longest stint of his career — before leaving after the 2000 season. In one of his last jobs, he coached Division III Chowan State in North Carolina, leaving in 2002 after the team went 0-10. pHe was an original, Joyce Saban said. He was one of a kind. pFuneral arrangements were incomplete. Joyce Saban said the family would have a mass at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach on Saturday. p___ pAP Sports Writer John Wawrow in Buffalo contributed to this report. < >

Chinese hacking network uncovered

March 29th, 2009

div class=”track”img alt=”" src=”http://hits.guardian.co.uk/b/ss/guardiangu-feeds/1/H.15.1/24538?ns=guardianpageName=World+news28News2CComputing+292CWorld+news2CObserverc5=Not+commercially+useful2CCorporate+ITc6=Paul+Harrisc7=2009_03_29c8=1191467c9=Article+29c10=GUc11=World+newsc12=Chinac13=c14=h2=GU2FChinah2=GU2FChinac13=c10=News+29c25=c26=Obs28nbs2FChina2F28Content+type7C11914677C” width=”1″ height=”1″ //divpA mystery electronic spy network apparently based in China has infiltrated hundreds of computers around the world and stolen files and documents, Canadian researchers have revealed./ppThe network, dubbed GhostNet, appears to target embassies, media groups, NGOs, international organisations, government foreign ministries and the offices of the Dalai Lama, leader of the Tibetan exile movement. The researchers, based at Toronto University’s Munk Centre for International Studies, said their discovery had profound implications. /pp”This report serves as a wake-up call… these are major disruptive capabilities that the professional information security community, as well as policymakers, need to come to terms with rapidly,” said researchers Ron Deibert and Rafal Rohozinski./ppAfter 10 months of study, the researchers concluded that GhostNet had invaded 1,295 computers in 103 countries, but it appeared to be most focused on countries in south Asia and south-east Asia, as well as the Dalai Lama’s offices in India, Brussels, London and New York. The network continues to infiltrate dozens of new computers each week./ppSuch a pattern, and the fact that the network seemed to be controlled from computers inside China, could suggest that GhostNet was set up or linked to Chinese government espionage agencies. However, the researchers were clear that they had not been able to identify who was behind the network, and said it could be run by private citizens in China or a different country altogether. A Chinese government spokesmen has denied any official involvement./ppGhostNet can invade a computer over the internet and penetrate and steal secret files. It can also turn on the cameras and microphones of an infected computer, effectively creating a bug that can monitor what is going inside the room where the computer is. Anyone could be watched and listened to./ppThe researchers said they had been tipped off to the network after having been asked by officials with the Dalai Lama to examine their computers. The officials had been worried that their computers were being infected and monitored by outsiders. The Chinese government regularly attacks the Tibetan exile movement as encouraging separatism and terrorism within China. The researchers found that the computers had succumbed to cyber-attack and that numerous files, including letters and emails, had been stolen. The intruders had also gained control of the electronic mail server of the Dalai Lama’s computers. /pp”The investigation was able to conclude that Tibetan computer systems were compromised by multiple infections that gave attackers unprecedented access to potentially sensitive information, including documents from the private office of the Dalai Lama,” the researchers concluded in their report. They have now notified various law enforcement agencies, including international groups and the FBI./ppThe news also comes as researchers at Cambridge University prepare to release a report today called Snooping Dragon, which looks at suspected Chinese cyber-monitoring of Tibetan exile groups. The report is expected to detail the unexpected scale and sophistication of such efforts by a government against a private body./pdiv class=”related” style=”float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;”ullia href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/china”China/a/lilia href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/computing”Computing/a/lilia href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/internet”Internet/a/li/ul/divdiv class=”terms”a href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk”guardian.co.uk/a copy; Guardian News Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our a href=”http://users.guardian.co.uk/help/article/0,,933909,00.html”Terms Conditions/a | a href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/help/feeds”More Feeds/a/divp style=”clear:both” / pa href=”http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/N98pIihuakmoecQ6-Nbi0FqaXR8/a”img src=”http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~at/N98pIihuakmoecQ6-Nbi0FqaXR8/i” border=”0″ ismap=”true”/img/a/p

TORC shows off WaySight and AutoNav-Mini for small, expensive robots

March 29th, 2009

The last we heard from the gang at TORC their tech was being used to snag third place in the DARPA Urban Challenge , and now Engineering TV has a couple programs highlighting some of the company’s more portable technology. Compared to other control units, WaySight is relatively small (under three pounds), and can be used to sight the robot either by selecting GPS waypoints via laser range finder in real time, or — if the GPS is unavailable — by sighting the robot and then the waypoint in relation to it. If the operator doesn’t find any of that appealing, the unit can be used to steer the robot using the unit’s built in accelerometer. The unit has a range of up to 400 meters. The AutoNav-Mini, which is installed on the robot, features a GPS unit, low level obstacle avoidance and detection sensors, laser range finder, radar, and more. This technology has all sorts of practical and legitimate uses, for sure — but none so satisfying as the fun we’d have chasing our little sister around the living room with it. Hit the read links for all sorts of crazy videos.
