Tesla-Smart Collaboration Produces Underwhelming Electric Car [Electric Cars]

April 25th, 2009

GIZMODO , Technology - pimg src=http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/04/tesla-smart-fortwo-car.jpg width=560 height=420 style=display:block; /The Smart fortwo seems like a perfect candidate for the electric makeover, and with a href=http://jalopnik.com/5130390/tesla-to-supply-battery-packs-for-the-smart-evTesla lending its expertise/a to the project, we all expected an impressive showing. But to be honest, we’re not thrilled./p pThe fortwo is a tiny, tiny car, and we’re sort of surprised it took so long to be fitted with electric guts. But the Tesla-Smart version still only has a range of 100 miles, and promises to cost even more than the gas or diesel versions, which already retail for about $20,000. Our brothers at a href=http://jalopnik.com/5130390/tesla-to-supply-battery-packs-for-the-smart-evJalopnik/a estimate this version will come in even pricier. It’s got a ton of power, since it’s featuring the same motor and gearbox as the Tesla Roadster, but in this kind of car we’d expect to see a little economy of power rather than superfast acceleration. Chelsea-Liverpool: Football Heaven!

April 20th, 2009

This is a blog about the 2010 World Cup but allow me to digress and focus on what was one of the most exciting matches I’ve ever seen in my life: Yesterday’s Champions League quarter final between Chelsea and Liverpool.br /br /For those who haven’t seen, please check out the video below.br /br /object height=”344″ width=”425″param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/pHFr7o-WafQamp;hl=enamp;fs=1″param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/pHFr7o-WafQamp;hl=enamp;fs=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” height=”344″ width=”425″/embed/objectbr /br /When the draw for this round of the Champions League was announced, most football fans let out a collective groan.br /br /Liverpool-Chelsea again? They’d met in 2005, 2007, 2008 … every season, no?br /br /With all that familiarity, was this going to end up the insipid affair most have seen between the 2 clubs the past few seasons?br /br /Former Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has this to say about the English wars ahead of their 2007 semi-final clash.br /br /blockquote”Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion - and, in that, Anfield is unbeatable. Put a shit hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate, crazy stadium and there are people who will tell you it’s a work of art. It’s not: it’s a shit hanging from a stick.br /br /”Chelsea and Liverpool are the clearest, most exaggerated example of the way football is going: very intense, very collective, very tactical, very physical, and very direct,” he added. “But, a short pass? Noooo. A feint? Noooo. A change of pace? Noooo. A one-two? A nutmeg? A backheel? Don’t be ridiculous. None of that. The extreme control and seriousness with which both teams played the semi-final neutralised any creative licence, any moments of exquisite skill.br /br /”If Didier Drogba was the best player in the first match it was purely because he was the one who ran the fastest, jumped the highest and crashed into people the hardest. Such extreme intensity wipes away talent, even leaving a player of Joe Cole’s class disoriented. span style=”font-style: italic;”span style=”font-weight: bold;”If football is going the way Chelsea and Liverpool are taking it, we had better be ready to wave goodbye to any expression of the cleverness and talent we have enjoyed for a century./span/span”/blockquotebr /br /Bold words from a passionate man.br /br /Although I don’t agree with all of Valdano’s opinion, he had a point.br /The games had become predictable and bland, defensive nightmares to watch.br /br /Yesterday’s match and their encounter last week at Anfield were anything but defensive nightmares. There were 12 goals scored overall, an avalanche compared to the one goal scored in their 2005 semi-final encounter.br /br /But more than that, it was the passion and grace exhibited in the two ties.br /br /Two of the biggest clubs in the world going toe-to-toe in a heavy weight battle. It’s not often we watch two behemoths such as these slug it out in an encounter as free-flowing, as physical, as intense.br /br /It was a true joy to watch. It’s the kind of game that serves as an advert for the uninitiated. When someone asks me why I love football, this is a game I can point to.br /br /’This … this amazing match is why I’m so addicted to this game!’br /br /Who didn’t think Liverpool had another Istanbul 2005 in them after Xabi Alonso scored that penalty? Who gave them up for dead after Chelsea’s second goal, only to see them fight back?br /br /What about that Alex free kick? Or Frank Lampard’s two goals at the end of the game to send Chelsea to the semi-finals once and for all?br /br /Was this the greatest Champions League match of all-time? a href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/gallery/2009/apr/15/championsleague-liverpool?picture=345978614″span style=”font-style: italic;”The Guardian/span ranks it up there but doesn’t rate this number one./abr /br /So which is? And what did you think of yesterday’s match?div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’http://res1.blogblog.com/tracker/8516325920166689032-7717789021010586157?l=roadto2010final.blogspot.com’//div

Obama Wants the World Cup in the USA

But how about the 2018 or 2022 Cup?br /br /In a letter hand-delivered to FIFA President span style=”font-weight: bold;”Sepp Blatter/span, (Blatter’s so important that Obama has to have his letter hand-delivered) the US President said, “As a child, I played soccer on a dirt road in Jakarta (his youth in Indonesia), and the game brought the children of my neighborhood together. As a father, I saw that same spirit of unity alive on the fields and sidelines of my own daughters’ soccer games in Chicago,” the president added.br /br /“Soccer is truly the world’s sport, and the World Cup promotes camaraderie and friendly competition across the globe,” Obama added in the letter, a part of which was released to The New York Times by the United States Soccer Federation with permission from the White House.br /br /“That is why this bid is about much more than a game,” he added. “It is about the United States of America inviting the world to gather all across our great country in celebration of our common hopes and dreams.”br /br /Obama is hoping to influence FIFA when the decision for 2018 and 2022 is made in December 2010, five months after the next World Cup in South Africa.br /br /Does the President have any experience with football?br /br /Sure does!br /br /According to the article:br /blockquotebr /He has attended games involving his 10-year-old, Malia, in Chicago and in 2003 visited his half sister Auma in London and went to a match at West Ham, in the Premier League. After he was elected president in early November, West Ham invited him to return to Upton Park, but his publicists denied the basic tabloid speculation that he roots for the Hammers, or anybody.br /br /A man that politically astute should know that the claret-and-blue Hammers are an ideal team for a community organizer. Long identified with shipbuilders and dockworkers, West Ham has seen many of its ticket holders move out of the area while local periwinkle shops gave way to halal butcher shops. The club has run clinics to draw neighborhood children from South Asia into their fan base.br //blockquoteSo what do you think? I know I’d love to see the World Cup here in the States.br /br /US Soccer is trying to use the popularity of the new President to sway FIFA’s vote. With the vast infrastructure already in place and the generally positive reviews the 1994 US World Cup received from FIFA executives, why not?br /br /The infrastructure isn’t there in South Africa. But FIFA awarded Africa their first World Cup for a variety of reasons.br /br /Brazil will host the 2014 Cup. They have a plethora of infrastructure issues.br /br /Maybe FIFA will decide to go with the nation most ready for the World Cup?br /br /England? The USA? What do you think?div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’http://res1.blogblog.com/tracker/8516325920166689032-3511976344066358275?l=roadto2010final.blogspot.com’//div

March 31st, 2009

Apple has just officially unveiled the dates for this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). It will be June 8 - 12 in San Francisco. As expected, the focus looks like it will be on the iPhone OS and Mac OS X Snow Leopard, judging from the website . These dates are almost spot-on with the days predicted earlier this month by The Baltimore Sun after it looked at the schedule for The Moscone Center, where the conference will be held. The paper also predicted June 8 would be the day Apple’s new operating system, Snow Leopard, would be unveiled . It’s looking more and more likely that Apple will use the keynote at this event to unveil Snow Leopard, although it isn’t expected to launch until a few months later. WWDC could also be the event where Apple shows off the next hardware version of the iPhone. A couple of weeks ago, it showed off the new iPhone 3.0 software , which will work on both the current iPhone 3G and the original iPhone model, but there’s been much speculation about a new device. This includes some newer rumors that it could feature video capabilities and better graphics for gaming. Seeing as the event is in June, one question that’ll undoubtedly come up is whether chief executive Steve Jobs plans to attend. When he went on medical leave in January he said he’d be until the “end of June.” But a major event with large announcements may be enough to bring him back a bit early, assuming he’s healthy. Last year , WWDC sold out for the first time, so Apple is recommending you buy your tickets early if you want in.

Apple and ATT hope suckers will clear out iPhone 3G inventory

March 31st, 2009

Allow me for a second to call anyone who doesn’t read sites like this one a sucker. You see, if you are reading, you know that it’s looking more and more likely every day that a new version of the iPhone will launch in the next few months. Yet, Apple and AT&T make no mention of that when offering “deals” and expanding the options when it comes to buying the current iPhone 3G. They need to clear out inventory — and that’s going to be a lot harder if people know a new version’s coming shortly. This week, the new deals from AT&T and Apple started popping up all over the place. First of all , you can finally buy an iPhone 3G without an AT&T contract. This is something the companies promised when the device initially launched last year . And it’s hardly a deal. A contract-free iPhone 3G will cost you $599 for the 8GB version or $699 for the 16GB model. You can buy them at AT&T stores, but if you do, they’ll still require you to have some sort of AT&T contract. And now you can buy them at Apple Stores — in unlimited quantities — no strings attached. Of course, unless you want to unlock the device, you’ll still have to get AT&T service eventually to use the thing. But if you really want to get it, say as a gift, this is an option. Of course, it would still be cheaper to get the subsidized version ($199 for the 8GB or $299 for the 16GB) and then just pay the fee to break your contract. And that’s not all the companies are doing to attempt to clear out the iPhone 3Gs. AT&T is now offering any of its non-iPhone customers (yes, they exist) the right to get an iPhone 3G at the subsidized price, even if their contracts are not yet up. Previously, AT&T’s upgrade clause required customers be at least 14 months into a 24 month contract before an upgrade would be offered. Now, that restriction is being entirely waved, AppleInsider has confirmed . So, if you really want an iPhone 3G, but previously felt restricted either by AT&T’s insistence on a contract — or, if you had a previous AT&T contract that you couldn’t get out of, now’s your time to act. Of course, it’s likely a sucker bet. Because a new iPhone is probably just around the corner. Just remember that when making your decision, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.
